On June 27, 2024, at around 2:27 p.m., the Rocky Mount Police Department was alerted by ECU Health Edgecombe Hospital in Tarboro, NC about a female named Merika Randall who had suffered a gunshot wound.

The victim, identified as 22-year-old Merika Randall, was attacked by her boyfriend, 29-year-old Joshawn Cherry. Authorities were able to track down Cherry in a vehicle, but he refused to comply with a traffic stop. Following a chase, Cherry was apprehended at 325 Kasey Lane.

The Rocky Mount Police Department's Criminal Investigation Division searched the residence at 325 Kasey Lane and charged Joshawn Cherry with multiple offenses including assault with a deadly weapon, discharging a firearm in city limits, assault on a female, misdemeanor domestic violence, resisting a law enforcement officer, felony fleeing to elude arrest, and reckless driving.

Joshawn Cherry is currently being held in Edgecombe County Jail without bond. Fortunately, Merika Randall is in stable condition following the incident.
