Columbus Fire Academy Completes Intensive Rescue Training

Staff Report / cbuslocal.org

The Columbus Division of Fire's 121st recruit class, known as Red Company, has recently finished the "Save Our Own" segment of their training academy. This five-day program focuses on intensive training for recruits on how to rescue their fellow firefighters in emergency situations where a firefighter may be incapacitated during a fire.

Captain Tim Boyd explained that the program offers various options for rescuing downed firefighters, emphasizing that the primary goal is to instill a mindset of perseverance among recruits. The drills and techniques taught in this training were developed after the tragic death of firefighter John Nance in 1987, who fell through a floor into a burning basement.

Among the key drills included in the training are:

- **The Nance Drill**, which teaches recruits how to rescue a firefighter who falls through a floor.

- **The Pulaski Drill**, based on the rescue of Lt. Mike Pulaski, where recruits learn to assist a firefighter suffering a medical emergency in a basement.

- **The Denver Drill**, created after a line of duty death in Denver, where techniques are taught for rescuing a firefighter from high or narrow windows using two ladders to create a high point anchor.

- **The Pittsburgh Drill**, designed after a Pittsburgh incident, which focuses on following a hose line over obstacles to rescue a down firefighter.

- The **Entanglement Box**, where recruits practice maneuvering through tangles of wires and simulated wall studs.

On the final day of the "Save Our Own" training, the recruits partake in off-site scenarios that consolidate all the skills they've acquired. Captain Boyd emphasizes the importance of this training, stating that it prepares recruits to be part of the specialized 1% of the population that is trained to handle high-pressure emergency situations.
