FDNY Rescues Four from Stranded Sailboat

Staff Report / nyclocal.org

On Sunday, the New York City Fire Department (FDNY) Marine units were called to assist a 35-foot sailboat that had run aground on East Nonations Shoal near Hart Island. The incident involved four civilians trapped on the vessel, which was located in the middle of Long Island Sound.

FDNY Marine 4, Marine 6, and the Marine Battalion responded to the scene. Upon contacting the civilians aboard the sailboat, it was decided that the safest action was to evacuate them and bring them to shore. Due to the shallow waters around the sailboat, the FDNY units could not approach it directly.

To overcome this challenge, Marine 6 deployed a 15-foot motorized Zodiac boat. Captain Sean Regan, Firefighter Christopher Defiore, and Firefighter Ryan Barnett used the Zodiac to reach the disabled sailboat and successfully evacuated the civilians. After the rescue, the individuals were transferred to Marine 4, where they were evaluated for injuries by Lieutenant Eugene McConnel, Firefighter Wayne Blatz, and Firefighter Joseph Gliamas. They were subsequently transported to local hospitals for further care. A towing company has been dispatched to salvage the sailboat.
