Jacob: A Portrait Reflecting Indigenous History and Identity

**Exhibition Features Portrait of Jacob by Ra Miller**
The artwork titled "Jacob," created by artist Ra Miller in 2019, is one of many portraits presented in an ongoing exhibition. This piece vividly represents Jacob's character through bold colors and expressive brushwork, capturing not only his physical appearance but also suggesting deeper personal narratives.
Ra Miller's work reflects on historical themes related to Indian residential schools in Canada and Indian boarding schools in the United States. These institutions aimed to assimilate Indigenous children, with sentiments expressed as "kill the Indian in the child" in Canada and "kill the Indian, save the man" in the U.S. Seneca scholar John Mohawk noted that these schools specifically targeted Indigenous thought and traditions.
The Survivors' Secretariat group at Six Nations Grand River has verified that at least 4,642 Indigenous children were taken from at least 59 different Nations to the Mush Hole, which operated from 1830 to 1970. Miller's piece, "Husk," created in 2003, also speaks to these historical experiences.
The exhibition, titled “RG Miller: Tsi Non:we Entewaha’hara’ne / Our Path Forward,” will close on Sunday, September 22, at the Rochester Contemporary Art Center.
