Military Assets Provide Growth Opportunities for Small Businesses
Staff Report / Sanlocal.org
San Diego has the largest concentration of military assets in the world and is exploring ways to engage its small businesses in supporting military interests while promoting economic growth.
To enhance small business involvement in military contracting, the San Diego Regional Economic Development Corporation (EDC) outlines three key strategies for larger buyers in the region:
1. **Coordinated Bidding Processes**: Emphasize consistency and coordination in the requirements and processes associated with bidding out contracts. This approach aims to improve accessibility for small businesses.
2. **Organizational Accountability**: Gather leaders and procurement staff across organizations to focus on the importance of inclusive procurement goals. This initiative seeks to create accountability and implement necessary changes.
3. **Engagement with Prime Contractors**: Utilize large prime contractors by including them in the procurement goal-setting process. This strategy aims to enhance visibility and create more opportunities for smaller suppliers.
EDC's Board Chair Jennie Brooks and Senior Director of Research and Economic Development Eduardo Velasquez have highlighted the significance of small business procurement and noted that companies like Booz Allen Hamilton are demonstrating leadership in this area.
