Study Reveals Earth's Temperature Changes Over 485 Million Years
Staff Report / DClocal.org
A new study conducted by the Smithsonian and the University of Arizona has provided significant insights into how Earth's surface temperature has changed over the last 485 million years. The research team, which includes paleobiologists Scott Wing and Brian Huber, has developed a detailed curve of global mean surface temperature (GMST) throughout this extensive geologic period.
Using data assimilation techniques, the researchers combined evidence from the geologic record with climate models. Their findings indicate that Earth's temperature has fluctuated more than previously understood during much of the Phanerozoic Eon, the last 540 million years. The study also highlights a strong correlation between Earth's temperature and atmospheric carbon dioxide levels.
Currently, Earth's GMST is measured at 59 degrees Fahrenheit, which is cooler than average temperatures experienced throughout most of the Phanerozoic. However, the study notes that greenhouse gas emissions from human activities are causing the planet to warm at an unprecedented rate, putting various species and ecosystems at risk and contributing to rising sea levels. Historical instances of rapid climate change in this eon have been linked to mass extinction events.
Despite the study being a significant contribution to understanding temperature changes, Huber emphasized that it is not the final word on the subject. He noted that ongoing research will yield more insights which could further refine the temperature curve in the future.
