A recommended checklist for an emergency preparedness kit includes:

- Three days' worth of non-perishable food and can openers

- Water, with a recommended one gallon per person per day for at least three days

- A flashlight

- A battery-powered or hand-crank radio, ideally a NOAA weather radio

- Extra batteries

- A first aid kit

- Necessary medications

- A cell phone and chargers

- Infant formula

- Pet food

- Sanitation and hygiene products

- A multi-purpose tool

- Cash or traveler's checks

- Important personal documents, such as birth certificates and passports

- Family and emergency contact information
