e-Bike Battery Fire Prompts Safety Reminder in Sarasota

Staff Report / sarasotalocal.org

On Sunday, September 29, Sarasota County Fire Department responded to a fire incident involving an e-bike battery in the 100 block of S. Gulfstream Avenue. The fire occurred in a storage area and was successfully contained by fire crews. No injuries or transports were reported, and the crews have since cleared the scene.

The incident highlights the potential hazards associated with lithium-ion batteries. Water exposure, particularly saltwater, can lead to dangerous chemical reactions that may result in fires or explosions if the batteries are damaged. Users are advised not to operate devices with lithium-ion batteries if they notice any signs of distress, including unusual odors, changes in color or shape, excessive heat, leaks, or strange noises.

For safety, it is recommended to keep lithium-ion batteries away from flammable materials and to relocate vehicles containing these batteries away from residences.
