Domestic Violence Awareness Month Recognized in D.C.

Staff Report / DClocal.org

In Washington, D.C., Mayor Muriel Bowser has officially proclaimed October 2024 as "Domestic Violence Awareness Month." This observance aims to raise awareness about domestic violence and its serious effects on individuals and communities. Domestic violence encompasses physical, sexual, and emotional abuse, as well as financial harm and coercion, typically from intimate partners, family members, or other household occupants.

The proclamation highlights that millions of Americans experience domestic violence each year. A specific report from 2023 indicates that on one day alone, 756 survivors in the District of Columbia sought assistance from domestic violence service providers.

The District of Columbia is focused on developing culturally specific initiatives to support survivors and increasing collaborations with public and private partners to address and end domestic violence in the city.

Residents in need of assistance can reach out to the DC Victim Hotline at 844-443-5732.
