Smoke Alarms: Your Key to Fire Safety!

Staff Report / FLXlocal.org

Fire Prevention Week is set to take place from Sunday, October 6th to Saturday, October 12th, according to the Geneva Firefighters Local 2859 in Geneva, NY. This year's theme is "Smoke Alarms, Make Them Work for You."

Residents are reminded to test their smoke alarms every month and to change the batteries every six months, or as needed. Smoke alarms should be installed on every floor of the home and in each sleeping area.

The Geneva Fire Department offers assistance for residents in need of smoke alarms. Individuals can contact the fire marshal's office at 315-789-6966 to arrange for free installation of smoke alarms in their homes. It is important to note that this number is a non-emergency line and not monitored 24/7. In case of emergencies, residents should call 911.

Additional fire safety practices suggested include knowing two ways out of the home, establishing a meeting place for families, keeping combustible materials away from heat sources, avoiding overloads on electrical plugs and extension cords, and adhering to cooking safety guidelines.

Throughout Fire Prevention Week, the Geneva Fire Department will visit city schools to educate students about fire safety. An open house at the local firehouse is scheduled for Tuesday, October 8th at 6:30 p.m., where families can attend and learn more about fire safety activities in the community.

Fire safety is emphasized as an ongoing priority, not only during this designated week but throughout the entire year.
