Akron Receives Federal Praise for Lead Pipe Removal

Staff Report / Akronlocal.org

The City of Akron has received praise from the Biden Administration for its lead removal efforts. Akron is on track to eliminate all lead pipes by the end of 2025 and remove all galvanized pipes connected to lead by 2027.

This announcement comes as part of a broader plan by the Biden Administration to replace lead pipes nationwide over the next decade. In their release, President Biden highlighted Akron’s achievements, noting the city is utilizing $9 million in funding from the American Rescue Plan for these efforts.

Currently, Mayor Malik is overseeing the replacement of the last 1,800 active lead service lines in the city. Akron’s initiative to address lead lines proactively has put it ahead of similar cities in the country. The city aims to complete this significant public health project soon.
