Staff Report / Akronlocal.org
The Akron Municipal Court and Glendale Cemetery are hosting an event to honor Civil War Veteran Lewis P. Buckley on Friday, November 8, 2024. The tribute will begin at 11:30 a.m. at Glendale Cemetery, located at 150 Glendale Avenue, Akron, Ohio 44302.
The ceremony will be held in the Civil War Memorial Chapel, with a subsequent walking tour of the cemetery. Members of the press and the public are invited to attend.
Buckley served as a Union Army Officer during the Civil War. He was commissioned as Captain and Commander of Company G, 19th Ohio Volunteer Infantry on April 22, 1861, at the age of 56. He was promoted to full Major shortly thereafter, serving until his regiment was mustered out on August 27, 1861. Buckley re-enlisted as Colonel and Commander of the 29th Ohio Volunteer Infantry on August 31, 1861, and continued in this role until he resigned due to health issues on January 26, 1863. After the war, he returned to Akron and was involved in local military affairs until his death in 1868. He is buried in Glendale Cemetery, where the G.A.R. Buckley Post Memorial is located near his grave.
The event will feature speakers Steven Kaut, the Chief Operating Officer of Glendale Cemetery, who will discuss the significance of the Civil War Memorial Chapel and lead the walking tour, and Mark Perkins, a history enthusiast active with the Kent Civil War Society, who will share insights on Buckley’s experiences as a veteran.
Attendees are advised that the chapel is not heated, and should dress appropriately for the weather. Greeters will assist guests with parking and entry directions upon arrival.
