**Akron Public Schools and United Way Partner to Provide Free Tax Assistance to Low-Income Families**

Akron, OH — Akron Public Schools (APS) and United Way of Summit and Medina counties have teamed up to expand free tax preparation assistance for low-income families. Through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, funded by the IRS, the partnership aims to help individuals and households earning $67,000 or less. The effort addresses a common challenge for many low-income taxpayers who cannot afford professional tax preparation services.

To support this initiative, several upperclassmen from East Community Learning Center (East CLC) recently joined a three-day program where they were trained to assist with taxes. During the tax season, six senior students served as tax preparers while two juniors volunteered as greeters at United Way’s Financial Empowerment Center in Akron.

United Way believes that with more certified volunteers involved in the VITA program, nearly 2,000 additional clients could receive assistance, further supporting local families during tax time. Programs like this provide a valuable learning experience for students while making a significant impact on the community by empowering individuals financially.

This collaboration reflects a shared commitment to providing meaningful resources for families and offering students real-world opportunities to contribute to their community.
