**International Holocaust Remembrance Day Observed in Akron, Ohio**

Today marks International Holocaust Remembrance Day, commemorating 80 years since the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, a concentration camp operated by Nazi Germany during World War II. The day serves to honor the millions of lives lost during the Holocaust and reflect on the lessons of one of history's darkest chapters.

The Holocaust was facilitated by Adolf Hitler's transformation of Germany into a dictatorship. Through legislative measures such as the Enabling Act of 1933, Hitler acquired the authority to create laws without the oversight of democratic processes. His regime used propaganda to incite fear, division, and hatred, targeting "others" in society.

The Holocaust resulted in the systematic murder of approximately six million Jewish men, women, and children—two-thirds of Europe's Jewish population. Additionally, millions of non-Jewish victims were killed, including Romani people, Slavic people, LGBTQ+ individuals, people with disabilities, political prisoners, those with differing religious beliefs, and other racial and ethnic minorities.

The failure of other nations and political leaders to take decisive action against these atrocities allowed the genocide to persist. Reflecting on these events emphasizes the importance of recognizing and confronting prejudice and discrimination in all its forms to ensure such tragedies are never repeated.

International Holocaust Remembrance Day calls on individuals and communities to stand against hate and remember the victims, ensuring their stories and the lessons from history are never forgotten.
