Geneva Lists Steps for Water Main Breaks

Staff Report / FLXlocal.org

**City of Geneva Provides Guidance on Water Main Breaks**

The City of Geneva, NY, has released detailed information about water main breaks to help residents and businesses understand these occurrences and the steps taken to address them. Water main breaks are a normal aspect of maintaining a water system, often caused by factors such as temperature changes, ground movement due to weather (dry or wet conditions), fluctuations in water pressure, corrosion, or aging infrastructure. Breaks are especially common during the winter months when frost-related ground movement occurs.

**Repair Process and Timeline**

Repairing a water main break typically takes between four to eight hours but can extend to several days depending on the size and location of the break, as well as environmental or utility-related obstacles. During repairs, certified personnel isolate the damaged pipe by shutting off water supply valves in the affected area. Once repairs are complete, the area is flushed and reconnected to the water system. Residents and businesses potentially impacted by the shutdown will be notified when possible.

**Post-Repair Expectations**

After repairs are completed, water discoloration may occur due to iron deposits flushing from the system. The City advises residents to resolve this by running cold water for a few minutes through the lowest non-aerated faucet in the building, such as a basement washtub or outdoor spigot.

**Reporting a Water Main Break**

Signs of a water main break include water pooling or running in streets or lawns, as well as reduced water pressure in nearby homes or businesses. Residents who suspect a break should contact 911 or the City of Geneva Department of Public Works at 315-789-3101 during regular business hours. Email communication is also available at complaints@geneva.ny.us.

The City of Geneva thanks residents and businesses for their patience during these unplanned emergencies and urges everyone to follow any traffic control measures or road closures implemented to ensure the safety of both the public and repair crews.
