Students Release Classroom-Raised Trout on Earth Day
Students in Shelley Walker’s Environmental Botany and Food Science classes at Geneva City Schools participated in a project that brought science learning into the outdoors. In April, the students took part in the Trout in the Classroom project, which is supported by the Finger Lakes Institute and the Wyckoff Family Foundation.
As part of the project, students raised trout in their classroom, caring for the fish from hatching to the fingerling stage while learning about the ecology and conservation of the species. On Earth Day, Ms. Walker’s students released the trout into a stream in Penn Yan as a symbol of the positive environmental impact of their work.
In addition to the ceremonial release, the students conducted a stream study in which they examined aquatic insects and other organisms. They also performed water quality testing to gain a better understanding of the stream ecosystem.
