Motorcycle Fatalities Up, Youth Risk Soars in May

City of Geneva Police in Geneva, New York reported that May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month. The report highlighted that in 2023, motorcyclists accounted for 15% of all traffic fatalities with 6,335 deaths, marking a 1.3% increase from 2022. In the same year, an estimated 82,564 motorcyclists sustained injuries in traffic crashes, representing a slight 0.2% decrease from the previous year.

The report also noted a significant rise in fatalities among motorcyclists aged 15 to 20. Deaths in this age group increased by 44%, rising from 350 in 2022 to 505 in 2023.

Authorities emphasized that both vehicle drivers and motorcyclists can play a role in reducing traffic fatalities by observing traffic laws, obeying speed limits, avoiding alcohol and drug use, and steering clear of distractions while driving or riding. In addition, drivers are urged to yield to motorcyclists, particularly when making turns at intersections. Motorcyclists are advised to wear high-visibility protective gear, DOT-compliant helmets, and to consider completing a motorcycle rider education and training course.
