Severe Storm Threat Looms in Northeast New Mexico

A backdoor front has moved through northeast New Mexico, bringing higher moisture behind it. Forecasters report that daytime heating may allow a few storms to develop in Union County this afternoon. A cluster of storms is expected to form in eastern Colorado and move southeast before exiting into Texas and Oklahoma around sunset.

The storms are expected to present a threat of large hail and damaging wind gusts of around 60 mph. The National Weather Service in Albuquerque has placed the area under a slight risk for severe storms. The outlook, valid from Tuesday, June 17, 2025, at 11:18 AM CDT until 7:00 AM CDT on June 18, 2025, highlights the potential for severe weather in Union County and far northeast Colfax County between 2 PM and 9 PM MDT.
