At Hobart and William Smith Colleges in Geneva, NY, Professor of Biology Mark Deutschlander is working on a bird migration research project at the Henry Hanley Biological Field Preserve. He is collaborating with Katie Crandall ’26 and Lily Morrell ’26 to record data, band, and release birds.

As part of his work, Professor Deutschlander teaches the ornithology course “Birds in Our Landscape.” The course helps students learn to identify local bird species, practice field methods, analyze bird distributions, and observe changes in the environment through bird activity.

The project is conducted under permits provided by the USGS Bird Banding Laboratory and the New York Department of Environmental Conservation, and it follows ethical guidelines from the North American Banding Council.
