Study Urges Proper Temperature for Safe Formula

Cornell University researchers in Ithaca have identified a risk associated with powdered baby formula contaminated with Cronobacter bacteria. The bacteria can cause septicemia, meningitis, and death in high-risk infants. The research found that caregivers can kill Cronobacter bacteria by using water heated to 158 degrees Fahrenheit during formula preparation. However, many package labels do not instruct caregivers to measure the water temperature, leaving infants at risk. The researchers recommend improved guidelines that advise on verifying water temperature and proper cooling steps to further protect infants.
