The City of Akron, Ohio, is kicking off Pride month on June 1 to celebrate the LGBTQ+ community. Akron has a history of supporting LGBTQ+ individuals and will be showcasing LGBTQ+ owned businesses, people, and organizations throughout the month.

However, it's important to recognize that the LGBTQ+ community, especially transgender individuals, are facing discriminatory legislation. There have been laws targeting trans youth and athletes, restricting gender-affirming care, and even drag bans. Pride month is not only about celebrating diversity but also about becoming better allies and advocates for the LGBTQ+ community.

The City of Akron is encouraging residents to educate themselves, engage in conversations, and learn more about the challenges that the LGBTQ+ community faces nationwide during Pride month and beyond.
