German Shepherd Adopted by Fire Department Employee, Thrives

Staff Report / cbuslocal.org

Izzy, a German Shepherd, was found as a stray in November of 2023 along with another dog. Despite efforts to locate their owners, Izzy's owners did not reclaim her. While the other dog was quickly adopted, Izzy waited at the Ross County Humane Society for nearly two months before being adopted by Amy Raike, the Columbus Division of Fire EMS Education Manager. Izzy had never known the love of a family before Raike took her in.

Raike noticed that Izzy initially did not understand play or know what toys were. Now, under Raike's care, Izzy enjoys playing with a frisbee and chasing a ball. The staff at the Ross County Humane Society grew attached to Izzy, and Executive Director Jenn Thomas recalls being emotional when Izzy was adopted, as she had been at the shelter for an extended period of time and had started to lose weight.

Considering Izzy a "borderline" dog, the shelter recognized that she needed more care and structure than they could provide. Thankfully, Raike was willing to give Izzy the time she needed to decompress and adjust to her new home. Raike emphasizes the importance of allowing a new dog at least three months to decompress after adoption.

Izzy's journey from stray to a trainee for Southern Ohio K9 Search and Rescue highlights the potential of shelter dogs. Organizations like the Ross County Humane Society take in many dogs each year, with most dogs ending up in shelters through no fault of their own. It is encouraged to consider adopting a dog from a shelter, as there are many deserving animals waiting for loving homes.
