Ice Medics Prepare for Columbus Blue Jackets Season

Staff Report / cbuslocal.org

Columbus Division of Fire paramedics, known as “ice medics”, will be present at every Columbus Blue Jackets home game this season. They are specifically trained to respond to medical emergencies on the ice.

On September 17th, these medics underwent training to prepare for the season, ensuring they can effectively communicate and interact with team trainers and physicians during emergencies. The National Hockey League mandates that three medics are stationed by the entrance to the ice, one medic is in the tunnel, and another is responsible for the transport vehicle. If the number of paramedics falls below the required amount or if the transport vehicle leaves the arena, the NHL will pause the game until the situation is resolved.

During the training, scenarios such as a player sustaining a spinal injury or experiencing a cardiac arrest were simulated. The medics practiced delivering emergency care in the unique environment of the ice rink, where factors like cold temperatures and the inherent risks of the sport complicate their efforts.

Dr. Robert Lowe, the Medical Director for the Columbus Division of Fire, noted the challenges posed by the ice, including the potential for equipment to freeze to the surface. He emphasized the importance of using skate guards while administering care due to the risks posed by players' sharp skates.

The Blue Jackets are set to play their first preseason home game against the St. Louis Blues tomorrow night, with the home opener scheduled for October 15th against the Florida Panthers.
