**Syracuse VA Health Care System Recognizes Domestic Violence Awareness Month**

The Syracuse VA Health Care System is observing October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM) with a focus on intimate partner violence (IPV), which affects 1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men. Veterans may be at a higher risk, experiencing IPV at twice the rate of the general population. This year’s DVAM theme is “Building Relationship Health and Safety for Life,” aimed at promoting wellness for Veterans, their partners, caregivers, and VA employees.

To raise awareness, individuals are encouraged to participate in several activities throughout the month, including:

- Wearing purple on National Purple Thursday, which falls on October 17, 2024.

- Decorating personal spaces with purple decorations during October.

- Observing a moment of silence to honor victims of domestic violence.

- Contacting the VA Intimate Violence Assistance Program (IPVAP) Coordinator at 315-425-4400 x54076 for information on healthy relationships and available resources.

- Attending wellness workshops on Fridays in October at the Syracuse Vet Center, which focus on expressing healing through art. Interested individuals can reach out to Brittanie Mendez at 315-478-7127 for registration details.

- Participating in the upcoming Expressive Art Event hosted by the Syracuse Vet Center and VA IPVAP.

This month’s newsletter includes further information on the Expressive Arts Event, a recipe for Pumpkin Chili, and a wellness article by Sara Curtis.

For additional tips on promoting a healthier lifestyle, readers are encouraged to review the Syracuse VA Medical Center's monthly updates.
