Historic Beach Plum Planting Returns to NYC

Staff Report / nyclocal.org

This weekend, a historic planting took place in New York City with the return of beach plums. The event was a collaboration between the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation, the Lenape Center, and Friends of Inwood Hill Park. It featured First Deputy Commissioner Iris Rodriguez-Rosa and Manhattan Borough Commissioner Tricia Shimamura, who joined volunteers in the restoration effort. Beach plums were historically revered and cared for by the Lenape Peoples, and this initiative aims to reintroduce them to the lands and waters of New York City.
