Low Folate Linked to Lung Cancer Genes

Researchers at Cornell University have found that low levels of folate, a B vitamin essential for cell growth, can trigger specific genetic changes seen in several human cancers, including lung tumors. The study identified folate deficiency as a potential contributor to the development and progression of lung cancer. The findings suggest that everyday nutrients, which are a part of normal cell metabolism, may play a role in causing the genetic alterations that lead to cancer. Previously, most research efforts had focused on known carcinogens such as tobacco smoke and radiation, leaving the role of metabolism largely unexplored. The study was conducted by scientists including John Blenis, the Anna-Maria and Stephen Kellen Professor in Cancer Research, and Guillermo Burgos Barragan, an instructor in pharmacology at Weill Cornell Medicine.
