Apex Unveils Historical Marker for Christian Church

The Town of Apex is inviting residents to participate in its Historical Marker Program, which supports property owners and tenants in installing markers at sites of local significance. The program is part of an effort to preserve and celebrate the town’s rich history. More details, including current historical sites and the grant application process, can be found on the town’s website.

One of the sites highlighted by the program is the Christian Home, also known as the Christian Church. Initially established as a meeting place in 1865, the Church was the first to be formed within what would later become known as Apex. Later in 1865, it became recognized as the first congregation of its kind in Wake County.

Reverend James O'Kelly, noted as the founder of the Christian Churches, played an important role in the community’s early religious history. O'Kelly also published an essay on Negro Slavery in 1789, making him one of the earliest American clergymen to speak out against slavery.

The current permanent structure of the Christian Church was built in the early 1900s through contributions from a diverse group of neighbors and friends. The historical marker for this site offers a glimpse into the beginnings of Apex and the collaborative spirit of its community during that period.
