Cornell Botanic Gardens Celebrates 100 Years of Stewardship
Cornell University in Ithaca houses the Cornell Botanic Gardens, which occupies one third of the university’s 745-acre campus. In addition to the campus area, the Gardens manage 3,800 acres of natural landscape, forests, and gardens. According to the university website, the Gardens were founded to secure and protect the natural landscapes on campus while providing areas for natural study, research, and public enjoyment.
The Gardens also serve an educational role. They offer learning and research opportunities for the university community and aim to inspire people to understand, appreciate, and nurture plant life and the cultures connected to it.
This year, the Cornell Botanic Gardens celebrates a century of stewardship over both campus and off-campus natural areas. More detailed facts about the Gardens are available on the Cornell Alumni website.
