Duck River Agency Calls for Voluntary Water Conservation
Staff Report / SHlocal.org
The Duck River Agency has requested the City of Spring Hill to join other water users along the Duck River in implementing voluntary conservation measures due to drought conditions in the area. The Duck River Watershed has areas experiencing "D3 Extreme Drought" conditions, with impacts such as inadequate water supply for wildlife. Spring Hill itself is currently facing "D1 Moderate Drought" conditions.
In response, the Duck River Agency is forming a Drought Response Team, comprised of local and state officials, to monitor drought conditions weekly and take further action if necessary. The agency has declared the river to be in a "Stage 1 River Drought," where downstream areas like Spring Hill are facing low river flow levels leading to significant loss of river water to groundwater replenishment.
The DRA is urging all water users to voluntarily reduce non-essential water consumption, which includes activities like irrigation, outdoor recreation, pool filling, and dust control during construction. These measures aim to protect the fragile ecosystem of the Duck River Watershed, known for its biodiversity, and ensure adequate water supply for all users.
The City of Spring Hill appreciates the community's cooperation in this conservation effort. The DRA will continue to monitor the situation closely, with updates expected in the upcoming weeks.
