Spartanburg Police Address School Threats on Social Media

Staff Report / Spartanburglocal.org

On September 15, 2024, at approximately 1:00 p.m., the Spartanburg Police Department received multiple reports regarding a concerning social media post circulating among students and parents in the Spartanburg community. The post included a video and images from Instagram showing an individual in a ski mask holding firearms, as well as an AR-15 style rifle. Text accompanying the images stated, “Monday 2:30 and Fearmecarver14.”

The post led to widespread alarm among students, parents, school officials, and community members. In response, investigators from the Spartanburg Police Department collaborated with the State Law Enforcement Division to identify those involved. It was determined that the threatening post featured a previously published video from another internet platform rather than new footage. The juveniles involved used unrelated content to create a post that implied a violent incident would occur on Monday, September 16, 2024, at 2:30 p.m. at Carver Middle School. This raised concerns at nearby schools, including Mary H. Wright Elementary, McCracken Middle School, and Cleveland Academy of Leadership. In light of the situation, School Resource Officers and additional police personnel increased their presence at those schools.

On September 16, 2024, law enforcement executed a search warrant at a residence in Spartanburg. During this operation, officers identified two juveniles linked to the threatening post: a 12-year-old female and an 11-year-old male. Both have been charged and issued juvenile summons for Breach of Peace – High and Aggravated Nature and Student Threats.

The Spartanburg Police Department took this incident seriously, noting that it caused significant concern and stress for the community, students, teachers, and public safety officials. They expressed appreciation for the public's assistance in addressing the situation and acknowledged that it concluded without any violence. The department remains committed to investigating and prosecuting those responsible for such threats.
