Columbus Fire Launches Bike Medic Team for Emergencies
Staff Report / cbuslocal.org
The Columbus Division of Fire has recently implemented a bike medic team to improve emergency response times during large events. This initiative comes as a response to challenges faced by larger medic vehicles when navigating crowded areas. The bike medics will work alongside the Columbus Police bike team to address medical emergencies more efficiently.
Sgt. Frank Lemak from the Columbus Police bike team identified the need for faster medical assistance during events due to limitations with larger vehicles. Over the past three days, 19 members of the Columbus Fire bike medic team have received training from Columbus Police trainers. They learned various tactics including crash prevention, slow-speed maneuvers, proper nutrition, fitness, and first-aid specific to biking injuries.
The bike medic training is modeled after a five-day program designed for the Columbus Police bike team but excludes law enforcement aspects. The formation of the bike medic team is a revival of efforts made a decade ago, when a bike unit was briefly started.
Last year, the Columbus Police donated old bikes to the Fire Division, which firefighter Jeff Langley refurbished. Langley took the initiative to paint and repair the bikes, ensuring they were suited for the new medical team.
The bike medics are now deployed at major events like Red, White and Boom, the Columbus Marathon, and OSU football games. Each team consists of a paramedic and an EMT basic, allowing for rapid response in crowded situations. The bike medics carry essential medical supplies, including medications and AEDs, to address emergencies swiftly and assess the need for further assistance.
