Cornell Initiative Boosts Biodiversity Using Planting Machines

Staff Report / FLXlocal.org

A new initiative at Cornell University in Ithaca is focusing on biodiversity enhancement by enabling farmers to plant milkweed and wildflowers alongside their corn fields. This approach is led by the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and utilizes existing corn seed planting machines for the task.

Antonio DiTommaso, a professor in the Soil and Crop Sciences Section, noted that farmers are receptive to this idea, which combines traditional farming methods with environmental stewardship. He emphasized that the concept, which began with discussions nearly ten years ago, is now being implemented in practice. This effort aims to improve habitats for monarch butterflies and bees, contributing to biodiversity and ecosystem health.
