El Centro: Celebrating Latin American Arts in D.C.

Staff Report / DClocal.org

In 1975, a group of artists founded the Spanish-American Community Arts (SACA) Project in Washington, D.C., as a part of the Fondo Del Sol organization. The following year, the SACA Project changed its name to El Centro De Arte Inc. (commonly known as El Centro) and began operating independently. The primary aim of El Centro was to create a community space dedicated to artistic classes and expression.

El Centro established its office in the Wilson Center, where it developed various art programs including Teatro Nuestro, Rumisonko, and Galeria Inti. The organization played a significant role in promoting and supporting art, music, photography, and poetry within the Latin American community.

Over the years, El Centro offered space for poetry readings, acting workshops, musical performances, and cultural celebrations across neighborhoods such as Mount Pleasant, Adams Morgan, and Columbia Heights. However, the organization ceased operations in 2001 due to changes in building management that resulted in a loss of performance space.

Despite its closure, the legacy of El Centro remains evident in the neighborhood murals that persist today. More information about these murals can be found at the provided link.
