Tropical Cyclone Nine Impacts Expected This Week

Staff Report / NPlocal.org

Advisories have been issued for Potential Tropical Cyclone Nine, which is forecasted to move northward into the Gulf of Mexico this week. Over the next 24 to 48 hours, more detailed information on potential impacts is expected to emerge. Possible effects include storm surge, heavy rainfall, and strong winds in the latter half of the week.

Marine conditions are anticipated to deteriorate from Tuesday night through Friday as the system progresses through the eastern Gulf of Mexico.

Current data indicates that the center of the cyclone is located at 17.6 N latitude and 82.0 W longitude, with maximum sustained winds of 30 mph and a movement speed of 6 mph northward. Forecast positions suggest that the tropical cyclone's sustained winds may reach levels below 39 mph, with potential impacts categorized accordingly.

The City of North Port is actively monitoring the situation. The Department of Public Works has lowered water levels in preparation for increased rainfall, while North Port Fire Rescue and Emergency Management are coordinating with the National Weather Service and Sarasota County Emergency Services for storm updates and preparedness efforts.

Although North Port is currently outside the cone of uncertainty, officials caution that tropical storm impacts can extend beyond this area. Residents are advised to update family emergency plans and procure disaster preparedness supplies. Additionally, they are encouraged to register with AlertSarasotaCounty.com for important safety messages. For ongoing updates, residents can monitor forecasts at weather.gov/tampabay.
