Vaping Exposes Users to Chemicals, Leads to Addiction

Staff Report / FLXlocal.org

Vaping can expose individuals to dangerous chemicals and lead to nicotine addiction, according to information from Cayuga County Health. Vapes consist of a battery and e-liquid. The battery heats the liquid to produce an aerosol or vapor that users inhale.

Many e-liquids contain propylene glycol, glycerol, flavorings, and nicotine, which is the same highly addictive substance found in cigarettes. Some vaping devices have nicotine levels equivalent to an entire pack of cigarettes. Nicotine addiction increases cravings and makes it difficult to stop using vape products. Teens are particularly vulnerable to addiction, as their brains are still developing, which can lead to short-term and long-term effects on attention, learning, and memory.

For those looking to stay vape-free and avoid nicotine addiction, resources are available. Individuals currently using vapes can seek help quitting, which may require multiple attempts. For assistance, visit teen.smokefree.gov/quit-vaping.

Additionally, vape aerosol contains harmful chemicals, such as formaldehyde, acrolein, and acetaldehyde, along with harmful metal particles like nickel and aluminum.
