Black Feminists' Legacy in Intersectional Advocacy

Staff Report /

**National Alliance of Black Feminists Paved the Way for Intersectional Advocacy**

In 1975, Brenda Eichelberger, a Chicago teacher and guidance counselor, took a groundbreaking step in the fight for social justice by founding the National Alliance of Black Feminists (NABF). This organization, which garnered thousands of members across the United States, was established to confront and address the intertwined issues of racism and sexism that Black women face daily.

Eichelberger’s work with the NABF emphasized what is now referred to as "intersectionality"—the overlapping systems of oppression that shape individual experiences and social identities. The organization’s logo, a striking image of Black female hands breaking twin shackles, symbolized its mission to dismantle both racial and gender-based barriers.

Artifacts from the NABF, including materials featuring the iconic logo, are currently on display at the Chicago History Museum. These pieces are part of the museum’s exhibition *Designing for Change: Chicago Protest Art of the 1960s–70s*, which highlights the role of art in advocating for critical social change in Chicago and beyond.
