Myrtle Beach Declares October Fire Safety Month
Staff Report / MBlocal.org
The City of Myrtle Beach has officially declared October 2024 as "Fire Safety Month" during a recent city council meeting. This proclamation highlights the city's commitment to the safety and security of its residents and visitors.
The proclamation notes that fire poses a significant public safety concern, particularly in homes, where individuals are most at risk. Nationally, there are nearly 375,000 home fires each year, resulting in 1,444 fatalities in 2023, including 36 deaths in South Carolina.
The importance of smoke alarms is underscored in the proclamation, stating that these devices can detect smoke early and provide essential alerts, potentially allowing as little as two minutes for escape in case of a fire. It emphasizes that functioning smoke detectors can reduce the risk of death from fire by half, and it encourages everyone in a home to recognize the sound of smoke alarms, know how to respond, and practice a fire escape plan.
The Myrtle Beach Fire Department is focused on lowering the incidence of home fires and fire-related injuries through prevention and education initiatives.
The city council's resolution concludes by encouraging the public to adhere to this year's slogan: “Smoke alarms: Make them work for you!”
